After a hectic day of gathering Letters of Recommendation from my college, I found myself heading home, mentally exhausted yet oddly content. As I walked through the bustling streets of Abids, something caught my eye—a familiar yet intriguing sight. At a distance, I saw the modest yet storied façade of J.K. Pen Stores, situated right next to the Grand Hotel, an establishment with a legacy dating back to 1935, one of Hyderabad's oldest running Irani cafés. J.K. Pen Stores, itself established in 1973, has its own share of history, and today, it seemed to call out to me.
With no specific purpose in mind, I pushed open the door and stepped inside. The store was neither expansive nor cramped—it had just the right amount of space, inviting yet unassuming. Pens of all kinds were meticulously arranged, each section organized by category, brand, and purpose. The sheer variety was almost overwhelming, yet it evoked a quiet excitement.

To my surprise, the owner of the store was present—a man whose demeanor reflected both experience and passion. I asked the salesman for a flat nib pen suitable for Gothic calligraphy. He promptly showed me an HB brand calligraphy set that included both pointed and flat nibs. But as I examined it, I felt a twinge of dissatisfaction—the quality wasn’t quite what I was looking for. The owner, perceptive and attuned to his customers, noticed my hesitation. With a nod, he directed the salesman to bring out a Worrison calligraphy set. It was an improvement, yet something still didn’t feel right, though I kept my thoughts to myself.
As I wandered through the aisles, I picked up a couple of ballpoint pens, adding them to my growing list of potential purchases. But there was an itch I couldn’t scratch—a sense that something was missing. Determined to find whatever it was, I circled the store once more. That’s when my eyes landed on a Parker calligraphy set. It was as if the pen called out to me, its elegant design and practicality shining through. Priced at ₹550, it wasn’t the most luxurious brand, but it had a quiet dignity about it. The set included various nib sizes, two blue refills, two black refills, and a reservoir for ink, all housed in a sleek blue body. Instantly, I knew this was the one.
Despite my initial excitement, a small doubt lingered—I wasn’t entirely sure how to use it. Gathering my courage, I asked the owner for guidance. He smiled warmly, reassuring me, "It's okay, beta, I'll show you how to use it after we settle the bill." His kindness gave me the confidence I needed, and I resumed browsing with a lighter heart.
My eyes then fell upon a set of Add Gel 3mm flat nib pastel pens, priced at ₹550. The set was unlike anything I’d seen before—unique, almost elusive. I tested the pens and instantly loved them. This set wasn’t available on Add Gel’s official website or any other online store or craft shop, making it a rare find. I knew I had to have it; the thought of never seeing it again solidified my decision.
As I explored further, I came across other renowned brands—Pentel, Kuretake, Zig, Waterman, Sheaffer—all offering a treasure trove of calligraphy supplies. This store was a haven for enthusiasts like me, a place where the art of writing was truly celebrated. I couldn’t resist picking up a few more pens, each one a small indulgence.
And then, almost as if it were waiting for me, a Sheaffer fountain pen caught my eye. Its ombre color and substantial weight made it stand out, a piece of art in its own right. Priced at ₹5,500, it was more than just a pen; it was a statement. The moment I held it, I knew this was something I would come back for one day. Is it worth spending that much on a pen? I believe it is—especially for someone who values the craftsmanship, the feel of quality in their hand, and the joy of writing with something special. A luxury pen is more than a tool; it's an experience, a symbol of personal achievement and taste.
As I admired the Sheaffer, the owner approached me with a gleam in his eye. "Let me show you something extraordinary," he said, leading me to a gold Sheaffer pen embedded with a single, exquisite 2-carat diamond. I hesitated, unsure if I should even touch it, but the owner insisted. "Hold it, have a look," he urged. The pen was unlike any other, with a thickness and weight that spoke of its high-quality metal construction. Priced at ₹17,300, it was a piece of luxury, not just a pen but a work of art. When I asked if I could take a picture, the owner graciously provided a stand, a testament to his pride and passion for these writing instruments.
He also showed me a range of pointed pen calligraphy nibs, an impressive collection that outshone even the best online stores, both in variety and price. The only thing missing was a pen holder, but the owner assured me they were on their way, a sign that this store was always evolving, always adapting to the needs of its customers.
After he patiently taught me how to use the Parker calligraphy pen set, I completed my purchase. I left the store not just with new pens, but with a deep sense of satisfaction, a feeling of having found something truly special.

Some experiences, some places, and some people leave a lasting impact on us, creating memories we cherish for a lifetime. My visit to J.K. Pen Stores was one such experience—a journey into the world of pens that I will carry with me for years to come.
